Built to Survive: How Darryl Taylor Created CSPM by Rethinking Sports Investing

Most people who enter the sports betting world are searching for the same thing: winners.

They want locks, guarantees, and the next can’t-miss opportunity. For Darryl Taylor, that mindset was the problem.

Taylor is the creator of CSPM (Context Score Project Management), a sports investing framework built around risk management, discipline, and long-term sustainability. While many systems focus solely on predicting outcomes, CSPM was designed with a different objective in mind: surviving the inevitable ups and downs that come with wagering and sports investing.

The philosophy behind CSPM wasn’t developed overnight. Originally from Pittsburgh, Taylor’s professional journey took him through military service, including a deployment that reinforced the importance of preparation, discipline, and operating under uncertainty. After leaving the military, he built a career in mortgage underwriting before transitioning into Payroll Tax.

Although those industries may seem unrelated to sports investing, Taylor believes they all revolve around the same fundamental principles. “Success rarely comes from chasing outcomes,” Taylor explains. “It comes from evaluating risk, making sound decisions, and protecting against downside.”

That perspective ultimately became the foundation of CSPM.

Instead of asking who was going to win a game, Taylor began asking a different question: “Is this opportunity actually worth risking money on?” The shift completely changed how he viewed sports investing.

As he studied betting markets, he noticed a common trend. Many bettors were capable of identifying winners, but very few knew how to manage risk. Even talented handicappers often struggled because they failed to protect their bankrolls during losing stretches.

Taylor responded by creating a system that focused on evaluating value, tracking market movement, identifying traps, measuring exposure, and understanding how bankrolls behave under pressure.

The result was CSPM.

Over time, the framework evolved into more than just a scoring system. It became a complete decision-making process designed to help investors identify quality opportunities while avoiding unnecessary risk.

One of the most important lessons Taylor learned was that not every opportunity deserves action. In fact, some of the best decisions a sports investor can make involve doing nothing at all.

“Passing on a game is often just as important as betting one,” Taylor says. That philosophy runs counter to the excitement-driven culture often associated with sports betting. CSPM encourages patience, discipline, and selectivity rather than constant action.

Today, the framework operates under a simple but powerful principle: Survive first. Compound second. Taylor believes protecting capital during difficult stretches allows long-term edges to eventually produce results. Every report, model, score, and bankroll strategy within CSPM is designed with that objective in mind.

At its core, CSPM isn’t about predicting every outcome. It’s about making smarter decisions, managing risk, and staying in the game long enough for probability to work in your favor.

The mission is captured in four words: Preserve. Compound. Sustain. Prosper. For Taylor, that’s more than a slogan. It’s the foundation of everything CSPM stands for.

Tell us a little about your background before creating CSPM.

I grew up in the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh and graduated from Perry Traditional Academy, where I played both football and wrestled. Those experiences taught me some of my earliest lessons about competition, preparation, discipline, and accountability.

After high school, I served in the military, including a deployment overseas. My time in service reinforced the importance of staying disciplined, following a process, and making sound decisions under pressure when outcomes are uncertain.

Following my military service, I built a professional career in underwriting, mortgage lending, and eventually Payroll Tax. While those industries may seem unrelated to sports analytics, they all revolve around evaluating information, assessing risk, and making decisions based on evidence rather than emotion.

When I look back, each stage of my life contributed something to the creation of CSPM. Growing up in Pittsburgh and competing in sports taught me resilience and preparation. The military strengthened my discipline and ability to operate under uncertainty. My professional career sharpened my analytical approach to risk assessment and decision-making. CSPM ultimately became the intersection of all those experiences.

What inspired you to create CSPM?

My brother for real. He was always “one away” on his parlays. I became frustrated with how much attention was placed on picking winners while very little attention was placed on managing risk. I saw talented handicappers lose money because they lacked discipline, bankroll management, or a structured decision-making process. I wanted to build a framework that focused not just on identifying opportunities, but also on determining whether those opportunities were actually worth risking capital on.

What does CSPM stand for?

CSPM stands for Contextual Score Projection Modeling

The name reflects the idea that no single statistic, trend, or opinion should drive a decision. Instead, multiple factors are combined into a structured framework designed to evaluate probability, value, and risk before capital is deployed.

How is CSPM different from traditional handicapping?

Traditional handicapping often focuses on predicting who will win a game. CSPM focuses on evaluating whether a betting opportunity presents enough value relative to its risk.

The question is not simply, “Who wins?” Instead, the question becomes, “Does this opportunity justify the risk being taken?” That shift in perspective changes the entire decision-making process.

How did your military experience influence your approach?

The military reinforced the importance of discipline, preparation, and staying composed in uncertain situations. You learn quickly that emotions can lead to poor decisions and that successful outcomes often come from following a process rather than relying on instinct alone.

Those lessons directly influenced CSPM’s emphasis on structure, consistency, and risk management.

What lessons from underwriting and Payroll Tax carried over into CSPM?

Both underwriting and Payroll Tax require careful analysis, attention to detail, and an understanding that decisions should be driven by evidence rather than emotion.

In underwriting, you are constantly evaluating risk and determining whether potential rewards justify exposure. In Payroll Tax, precision, compliance, and process are critical. CSPM incorporates many of those same principles through data analysis, probability assessment, and disciplined decision-making.

What’s the biggest mistake sports bettors make?

The biggest mistake is focusing solely on winning bets instead of managing risk.

Many bettors believe profitability comes from picking enough winners. In reality, long-term success depends on position sizing, bankroll preservation, and avoiding unnecessary exposure. A bettor can be right often and still lose money if risk is not managed properly.

Why do you place so much emphasis on bankroll management?

Because survival comes first.

Even if you have a genuine edge, variance is inevitable. If poor bankroll management causes you to exhaust your capital during a downturn, your edge never has the opportunity to work overtime.

Bankroll management is not the most exciting part of sports betting, but it is often the difference between longevity and failure.

Is passing on a game really as important as betting one?

Absolutely.

One of the most important lessons CSPM teaches is that pass decisions have value. Not every game presents a worthwhile opportunity. Sometimes preserving capital for a stronger edge tomorrow is the smartest decision available.

Discipline is often measured not by the bets you make, but by the bets you choose not to make.

What is the core philosophy behind CSPM?

The core philosophy is simple:

Protect capital first. Grow capital second.

Everything within CSPM, including probability modeling, market analysis, bankroll management, and risk scoring, is designed around making sound decisions that can withstand both winning and losing periods.

What do you hope people take away from CSPM?

I hope people begin thinking differently about sports betting and risk.

Whether someone uses CSPM directly or not, I want them to understand that long-term success is built on discipline, process, and consistency. The goal is not to win every bet. Instead, the goal is to make quality decisions repeatedly over time.

What does the CSPM motto mean to you?

Preserve. Compound. Sustain. Prosper.

Those four words summarize everything CSPM stands for.

Preserve your capital so you can survive difficult periods.

Compound your gains through disciplined growth rather than reckless risk-taking.

Sustain your process through consistency and patience.

Prosper by allowing sound decisions and proper risk management to work over the long run.

To me, the motto is not just about sports betting. It is a philosophy that applies to investing, business, and life itself.
