Some athletes are loud. Others let their game do all the talking.
David Harvey was always the second type.
If you knew David growing up at Penn Hills, you know he wasn’t the guy chasing attention. He was a man of few words, but once he stepped onto the football field, everything changed. His speed, athleticism, and ability to make big plays spoke louder than anything he could have said.
He was one of the most gifted wide receivers to come through Penn Hills in any era. That talent carried him to the University of Akron, where he made an immediate impact as a true freshman. Harvey earned Freshman All-American honors and looked every bit like a player with NFL potential. The future seemed incredibly bright.
Like many young people, though, life didn’t unfold exactly as planned.
We all make mistakes. Looking back, I’m sure there are decisions David wishes he could do differently. But that’s part of being human. None of us gets through life without regrets or lessons that shape who we become.
One thing I’ve always believed is that environment matters. Sometimes good people find themselves surrounded by situations that make life much harder than outsiders realize. That doesn’t define who they are, it simply becomes part of their journey.
Anyone who truly knows David knows he’s a good person with a good heart. His story is also a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough. Character, decisions, opportunity, and timing all play a role in where life takes us. God has a plan for every one of us, even when we don’t understand it in the moment. Life rarely follows the path we expect, but that doesn’t mean God has forgotten us. Sometimes our greatest lessons come through our biggest setbacks.
David Harvey had the ability to play in the NFL. Few who watched him at Penn Hills or Akron would argue against that. His talent was undeniable.
Today, I choose to remember the athlete, and the quiet competitor who let his actions speak for him.
Because sometimes the most powerful stories aren’t just about what someone accomplished. They’re about what we can all learn from the journey.
