From Taboo to Trend: How Botox Became Mainstream in America

Twenty years ago, Botox was something most people talked about quietly—if they talked about it at all.

Cosmetic injectables were often associated with celebrities, wealthy individuals, and dramatic cosmetic transformations. Treatments were typically performed behind the closed doors of medical offices, and many people viewed aesthetic procedures as something reserved for Hollywood rather than everyday life.

Fast forward to today, and the conversation looks completely different.

Botox is now discussed openly on social media, during brunch conversations, and among friends and coworkers. What was once considered taboo has become increasingly mainstream, helping fuel one of the fastest-growing industries in healthcare and beauty.

The rise of aesthetic medicine reflects more than changing beauty standards. It also reflects changing attitudes about aging, self-care, confidence, and personal wellness.

Over the past two decades, Botox has evolved from a wrinkle treatment into a household name. Along with dermal fillers, skin rejuvenation procedures, IV hydration therapy, weight-loss treatments, and other non-surgical services, aesthetic medicine has become accessible to people from all walks of life.

Social media has played a major role in that transformation.

Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have allowed consumers to learn about procedures directly from medical professionals and patients. Treatment demonstrations, before-and-after photos, and educational content have helped normalize procedures that many people once viewed with skepticism.

For many consumers, aesthetic treatments are no longer viewed as vanity. Instead, they are often seen as an investment in self-confidence and personal well-being.

The demand continues to grow among both women and men, with clients ranging from young professionals seeking preventative treatments to older adults looking to maintain a refreshed appearance. As technology and techniques continue to improve, many treatments now offer subtle, natural-looking results that differ significantly from the exaggerated outcomes people often associated with cosmetic procedures years ago.

The industry itself has also evolved beyond beauty.

Today, many aesthetic practices incorporate wellness-focused services such as IV hydration, medical weight-loss programs, skin health treatments, and other services designed to help clients feel better both physically and mentally. The goal for many providers is no longer simply changing appearances but helping patients feel more confident in their own skin.

To gain deeper insight into this rapidly growing industry, SayLess Media recently caught up with Justina ‘Justy’ Newton, MSN,
APRN, FNP-BC -owner of Botox’d Beauty Company in Follansbee, West Virginia for a Q&A session.

Botox’d Beauty specializes in Botox, dermal fillers, IV hydration therapy, teeth whitening, weight-loss services, and a variety of other aesthetic treatments. During our conversation, Newton shared her thoughts on the evolution of aesthetic medicine, common misconceptions about cosmetic procedures, and why more people than ever are embracing treatments that were once considered off-limits.

As aesthetic medicine continues to grow, one thing is clear: Botox is no longer a secret. It has become part of a broader cultural shift in how people approach aging, confidence, and self-care. The days of whispering about cosmetic treatments appear to be over.

Tell us about your background and what inspired you to enter the field of aesthetic medicine.

I am a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and the owner of Botox’d Beauty Company in Follansbee, West Virginia. I’ve worked in healthcare for over 13 years and have been practicing as a nurse practitioner for the past five years. I initially entered medicine because I wanted to help people improve their quality of life. Aesthetic medicine became a natural extension of that passion. I quickly realized that enhancing someone’s confidence can be just as impactful as treating a physical illness. Watching patients look in the mirror and feel like the best version of themselves is incredibly rewarding.

Twenty years ago, Botox was something people rarely talked about. Why do you think public perception has changed so much?

I think education and visibility have played a huge role. Years ago, aesthetic treatments were often associated with celebrities or viewed as something secretive. Today, people are more open about self-care and investing in themselves. As providers, we’ve also done a better job of educating patients about the safety, effectiveness, and subtle results that can be achieved with these treatments.

What are some of the biggest misconceptions people still have about Botox and cosmetic injectables?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Botox will make you look frozen or expressionless. When administered properly, Botox softens lines while preserving natural movement. Another misconception is that injectables are only for vanity. Many patients seek treatment because they want to look refreshed and feel more confident, not because they want to look like someone else.

What types of clients are you seeing today compared to when you first started?

When I first started, most patients were seeking treatment after deeper lines and signs of aging had already developed. Today, we’re seeing a broader range of patients, including younger adults interested in prevention. We’re also seeing more men pursuing aesthetic treatments. Overall, people are becoming more proactive about both wellness and aging gracefully.

How much has social media contributed to the growth of the aesthetics industry?

Social media has had a tremendous impact. It has helped educate consumers, normalize aesthetic treatments, and allow providers to showcase real results. However, it has also created unrealistic expectations at times through filters and heavily edited images. That’s why honest conversations and patient education are so important.

What are the most popular services currently offered at Botox’d Beauty?

Neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport remain some of our most requested treatments. We also see a high demand for dermal fillers, weight-loss programs, hormone optimization, laser treatments, and skin rejuvenation services. Patients today are looking for comprehensive approaches that address both beauty and overall wellness.

For someone considering Botox for the first time, what should they know before scheduling an appointment?

Choose a qualified medical provider who will take the time to understand your goals and answer your questions. Botox is a medical treatment, and every face is unique. The best results come from individualized treatment plans rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Many people worry about looking unnatural. How do you help patients achieve a natural appearance?

My philosophy has always been enhancement, not transformation. I want my patients to look refreshed, rested, and confident—not different. A conservative approach, ongoing communication, and respecting each patient’s unique anatomy are key to achieving natural results.

Has the rise of wellness culture changed the way people view aesthetic treatments?

Absolutely. More people now recognize that looking good and feeling good often go hand in hand. Patients are increasingly interested in a holistic approach that includes hormone optimization, nutrition, skincare, stress management, and aesthetic treatments as part of their overall wellness journey.

What role does confidence play in why people seek these services?

Confidence is often at the heart of it. Most patients aren’t trying to become someone else—they simply want their outward appearance to better reflect how youthful and vibrant they feel inside. When people feel confident, it can positively impact every aspect of their lives.

Beyond Botox and fillers, what trends are you seeing emerge in the aesthetic medicine industry?

We’re seeing significant growth in regenerative medicine, energy-based devices, skin health treatments, and wellness services. Patients are increasingly interested in treatments that stimulate collagen production, improve skin quality, and support healthy aging from the inside out.

How important is it for patients to seek treatment from qualified medical professionals?

It is extremely important. Injectables are medical procedures that require an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy, patient assessment, and complication management. Choosing an experienced, licensed medical provider helps ensure both safety and optimal outcomes.

What advice would you give someone who is nervous about trying aesthetic treatments for the first time?

Start with a consultation. Ask questions, discuss your concerns, and don’t feel pressured to move forward until you’re comfortable. Most first-time patients are pleasantly surprised by how quick, comfortable, and natural the process can be. It’s perfectly okay to start small.

Looking ahead five years, where do you see the aesthetics industry heading?

I believe the future of aesthetics will continue moving toward prevention, personalization, and wellness integration. Advances in technology and regenerative treatments will allow us to deliver even more natural-looking results while supporting healthy aging. Patients will increasingly seek providers who can address both aesthetics and overall well-being.

What is the mission of Botox’d Beauty, and what separates your business from others in the industry?

Our mission at Botox’d Beauty is to help patients feel confident, empowered, and cared for through personalized aesthetic and wellness services. What sets us apart is our commitment to combining medical expertise with compassion. We take the time to build relationships, educate our patients, and create treatment plans tailored to each individual’s goals.
